Renew Year’s Eve in 2049

The Future Room is an evolving design by the Interaction Research Studio of Northumbria University. This winter scenario was co-curated with Leslie Dixon from the Museum’s Community Authors group.

The “turkettes” are in the oven for Yusef's family’s Renew Year’s Eve dinner, a holiday embraced since the late 2030s to bring together people of all faiths and backgrounds.

What's happening

Yusuf sighs with satisfaction as the roast protein ‘turkettes’ brown up nicely for the household’s Renew Year’s Eve dinner. His family, like many others, have celebrated this holiday ever since it was introduced in the late 2030s as a way of uniting people from all faiths and backgrounds.

Everyone eagerly awaits the choreographed drone display later in the evening as Yusuf’s son, Ali, carefully arranges family trinkets and mementos around the tree that he made as a schoolchild years ago. These reminders of the household’s diverse pasts are a key part of celebrating the flow of life that has led them together to create a hopeful future.
