Audiences will come face to face with 15 women as they sing acapella, sometimes alone, sometimes overlapping in a chorus of voices.
Inspired by his family story of migration from Eastern Turkey to London, Karababa worked with women across Hackney who had the shared experience of having been born outside of and moved to the UK.
In a series of sessions between April and June 2022 contributors shared personal stories with each other and contemplated the question, “which one song takes you back to the place you first called home?”
Sung in their original languages, the songs have English subtitles allowing the viewer to experience their themes of land, love, and loss.
Alongside the installation, there will be a series of associated events including workshops for families and panel discussions exploring the work further, details of which will be shared on our events page.
One Song was commissioned by Counterpoints and funded by Hackney Council’s Shoreditch and Hoxton Art Fund, created from a levy on developers to support arts and culture programmes that bring different communities together.
Kadir Karababa’s practice is both socio-politically engaged and deeply rooted in his personal experiences of class, identity and collective memory. Encompassing sculpture, print, audio-visual and performative elements his work often makes use of archival research, found images and cheap everyday materials that are at hand.
Kadir was born in London in 1985 and has mixed Turkish, English and Cypriot heritage. He lives and works in Hackney, London. He is a graduate of MA Arts and Place, Dartington Art School.
