We are a charity and also registered as a company under the Geffrye Museum Trust Ltd.

How we run our museum

We are overseen by a group of Trustees. Our Trustees are all volunteers. They set the policy and strategy for the Museum, and hold our leadership accountable for delivering what the strategy requires. They scrutinise the decisions that Museum leadership makes. 

The Trustees appoint our Director, who leads the Museum. They take responsibility for the overall management of the Museum. Members of the leadership team report to them and to the Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer.

Each member of the leadership team takes responsibility for a different area of the Museum’s activity. This includes 

  • Communications: our press, marketing and digital activities
  • Commercial: our hires and shop
  • Development: working with our patrons, donors and sponsors
  • Finance: our income and outgoings
  • HR: managing our workforce
  • Creative Programmes: our exhibitions and events
  • Collections: the objects and archival material in our care
  • Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer: our governance, finance, HR, estates and legal frameworks, as well as our commercial, operations and front of house staff

Funding our museum

We receive UK government funding, which classifies us as a ‘Public Body’, and an ‘Arm’s Length Body’ of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Ten of the fourteen trustees are elected by the Board and the remaining trustees, including the Chair, are appointed by the Secretary of State for DCMS.

Additionally, the museum owns a trading company, Museum of the Home Enterprises Ltd (number 11687292), which manages venue hire and retail functions. This company is led by Directors who are Trustees, other volunteers, and the Deputy Director/COO.
