Bánh Chưng making workshop with Greenwich Vietnamese Women’s Group

Join the women of the Greenwich Vietnamese Women’s Group for a warm, hands-on celebration of Tết as we come together to make Bánh Chưng – the iconic sticky rice cake that lies at the heart of Vietnamese culture and family life.

Bánh Chưng is more than food. It is a powerful symbol of gratitude to our ancestors, the earth that sustains us, and hopes for a prosperous year ahead. For generations, families have gathered around steaming pots to wrap, tie, and boil these cakes together – sharing stories, laughter, and memories while passing traditions from one generation to the next.

In this guided workshop, you’ll learn directly from Vietnamese women who carry this tradition in their hearts and hands. You’ll get stuck in by wrapping sticky rice, mung beans, and pork in fragrant banana leaves, tying them into their distinctive square shape, and preparing them for boiling. Along the way, you’ll hear the ancient folklore behind Bánh Chưng and discover why it holds such a special place on ancestral altars and at every Tết celebration.

Whether you come to reconnect with your roots, learn something new, or simply enjoy good food and company, this is a space to share, create, and celebrate together. Come and be part of a living tradition that brings community, culture, and connection to life.

This creative workshop is a part of our ESEA community programme and is reserved for people of the East & Southeast Asian diaspora only.

This event is part two of our 2026 Lunar New Year series programmed by An Việt Archives, the largest known community archive of Vietnamese history in the UK. The series is delivered with Greenwich Vietnamese Women’s Group, the last remaining Vietnamese women’s group in the UK, founded by Vietnamese refugees and migrants who carried their traditions with them across oceans and generations.
