We are a charity and also registered as a company under the Geffrye Museum Trust Ltd.
We are an independent charitable company, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and our sponsors. Donations also support our work and are vital to delivering our work.
We are Museum of the Home. We are an independent charitable company limited by guarantee set up as the Geffrye Museum Trust in 1990, registered charity number 803052, company number 2476642.
The museum receives government funding, known as grant-in-aid, amounting to just under £2m for 2025-26. This funding classifies the museum as a ‘Public Body’ and an ‘Arm’s Length Body’ of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). DCMS appoints four of the Trustees, including the Chair.
As an Accounting Officer, the Director is accountable to Parliament for the public money spent.
We must also support ourselves through earned income and donations. The museum owns a trading company, Museum of the Home Enterprises Ltd (number 11687292), which manages room hire and retail functions. This company is led by Directors who are Trustees, other volunteers, and the Deputy Director/COO.
You can make a donation to help the museum continue to deliver its outstanding programme.
