Shoreditch Design Triangle Late: The Art of Reinvention

Every day, millions of household items are discarded, often before they’ve reached the end of their potential life. Now, more than ever, we need to start rethinking waste and exploring ways to reuse, repurpose, and transform the materials around us.

Art plays a vital role in this shift; it challenges perceptions, reshapes habits, and sparks new ways of seeing the resources we already have. House of Frisson is built on this ethos, turning discarded ceramics into bold, meaningful artwork that speaks to identity, transformation, and reinvention.

Join artist Luciano Rocha for a hands-on collage workshop celebrating artistic storytelling, sustainability, and creative reuse.

Together, we’ll explore collage as a medium for transformation, cutting and layering meaningful imagery onto discarded ceramic plates, embracing the beauty of repurposing materials and turning fragments into powerful expressions of creativity. Participants will incorporate symbolic elements, creating meaningful and thoughtful compositions on plate surfaces, transforming what used to be a discarded plate into an artwork that can be proudly hung on the wall.

After the session, Luciano will take the creations and apply a protective sealer to the designs, ensuring they are preserved against damage. Participants will be able to collect their finished artworks at an agreed time.

This new guided tour with Echo Godfrey tells the history of textiles and how they have influenced the ways we have lived from the 1600s to the present day and beyond. Through our period rooms and collection displays, explore fabrics, soft furnishings, and the stories they tell about craft, industry, global trade and the role textiles have played in advancing technology. From craftspeople working from home to high-end British design, this tour will illuminate the often-overlooked history of textiles, the people who make them and the influence of textiles on daily life.

Join Marina from Museum of the Home’s curatorial team as she delves into the exhibition design process behind our seven newest Rooms Through Time, featuring stories of local communities between 1878 and 2049.

Our Gilded Veins, composed by Jay Capperauld, is inspired by the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi, the mending of broken objects not only to repair them but to highlight their previous damage in a special and positive light.

If a plate is broken, instead of throwing it away, it is glued together with gilded lacquer to emphasise and celebrate the break as part of the object’s history. As a human concept, Our Gilded Veins is an honest reflection on damage, failure and scars, to embrace the necessity of life’s negatives while attempting to forge a positive existential outcome.

Amateur Weather Observers will be hosting two knitting demonstrations on the night including an introduction to knitting and Knitting pictures: a demonstration of the intarsia techniques used in their signature landscape vests. The Suburban Landscape Vest is from the 2022 collection In the Middle of Nowhere, is an ode to the non-places of British suburbia. The collection was photographed on family and friends in an old pit village on the outskirts of Durham City, where Laura grew up.

Luciano Rocha is the founder and artist behind House of Frisson, a sustainable art project transforming discarded ceramics into bold, thought-provoking statement pieces. Through collage, painting, and hand-drawn illustrations, Luciano gives forgotten objects new life, infusing each piece with whimsy, rebellion, and unapologetic social commentary. His work challenges perceptions of waste, celebrating the beauty of reinvention, storytelling, and artistic transformation.

Drawing inspiration from surrealism, nostalgia, and symbolism, his compositions feature unexpected elements—vintage dolls, broken toys, pearls, bones, lizards, and his signature fly—woven into designs that spark conversation and curiosity.

Beyond his upcycled ceramic collections, Luciano extends his vision into prints, greeting cards, coasters, and badges, ensuring a little piece of House of Frisson can live in everyday spaces. As a champion of the circular economy, he is committed to minimising environmental impact while embracing creativity as a force for change.

In his workshops, Luciano brings this philosophy to life, guiding participants through artistic experimentation and material reuse. His hands-on approach encourages individuals to see discarded objects in a new light, using collage and storytelling to transform waste into art. Past workshops have been held at Eade Studios, Bruce Castle Museum, The Trampery Tottenham, and LGBTQ+ creative spaces, fostering conversations around sustainability, reinvention, and personal expression.

The RSNO is Scotland’s national symphony orchestra and one of the five National Performing Companies, supported by the Scottish Government. The RSNO is a symbol of Scottish cultural excellence. Established in 1891, it continues to deliver the highest quality musical experience and enjoyment throughout Scotland, which has been shared by generations.

Scottish composer Jay Capperauld (born 1989) graduated Masters in Composition with Distinction from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2014 under the tutelage of Dr Gordon McPherson. Jay has since composed for various artists & organisations including; BBC Proms, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Psappha Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, The Orchestra of Opera North, The Wallace Collection, Red Note Ensemble, Workers Union Ensemble, the Glasgow New Music Expedition, the Glasgow School of Art Choir, West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra Trust and St Mary’s Music School.

This tour is led and developed by Echo Godfrey, Collections Officer at the Museum of the Home. Echo has a degree in Knitwear, has worked in the fashion industry, and has a Masters in Textile Conservation which informs their work as a member of the Collections and Curatorial team.

Katherine is Principal Flautist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, a position she has held since she was just 21. She has played as Guest Principal flute with orchestras throughout the UK and across the world. She is in great demand as a teacher, and tutors for both the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and Great Britain, as well as running her own International Flute Course. Katherine has performed live on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and BBC television. In 2019, she was named by the BBC Music Magazine as one of the top 6 international flute players of all time.

Frances Gibson

Frances Gibson (b.1995) is an artist based between her studio in London and family pottery in Leicestershire. Through her illustrative and witty ceramics, Gibson explores nature, humor and queerness.

Gibson is also an educational workshop leader, who runs technical and creative classes at Rochester Square.

The Little Oasis

The Little Oasis is a shop initiated in 2017, rooted in a passion for travel, textiles, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions. During time spent in South America and Africa, I connected with gifted artisans whose work continues to inspire the curated selection in the shop today.

All items are sourced from around the world and showcase beautiful craftsmanship — from handwoven textiles and rugs to objects made using traditional techniques. In addition, we’ve completed our collection with a thoughtful edit of vintage and second-hand pieces, as well as creations from independent makers, all selected for their character and the stories they carry — often embracing the charm of imperfection.

After a pause in 2020, The Little Oasis is gradually returning through monthly pop-ups in Hoxton, continuing to celebrate handmade traditions and timeless design.

The Amateur Weather Observers is a British knitwear brand by Laura Chopin Emsley. Inspired by the UK’s erratic climate and diverse landscapes, each garment is hand knitted with British wool by Laura and a passionate team of home hand knitters.

The Home of Sustainable Things (HOST) proudly stands at the forefront of circular design, leading the creation and curation of products with zero or low-carbon footprints. Its sophisticated collection showcases an extraordinary range of materials, processes, and innovative possibilities available in the market. HOST is also the first space dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and advancing circular design, bringing innovators together to drive transformative change in the sector while offering the public the opportunity to discover and purchase these groundbreaking creations.
